Born in Slovakia in 1953, Pavol Hloška is one of the foremost exponents of contemporary optical glass sculpture. For more than four decades, he has devoted himself to exploring the extraordinary relationship between glass, light and geometry, creating works of exceptional precision, elegance and visual depth.
Hloška's sculptures are distinguished by their immaculate craftsmanship. Each work begins as a solid block of optical glass, painstakingly cut, ground and polished to achieve absolute clarity. Through this meticulous process, he transforms a rigid material into compositions that appear almost weightless, where light itself becomes an essential element of the sculpture. As the viewer moves around each piece, reflections, refractions and subtle shifts in colour create an ever-changing visual experience, ensuring that no two viewpoints are ever quite the same.
Although geometric in form, Hloška's sculptures possess a remarkable sense of movement and harmony. Their clean architectural lines are balanced by an extraordinary sensitivity to proportion, rhythm and light, inviting quiet contemplation rather than immediate interpretation. His work celebrates the unique optical properties of glass, revealing the material not merely as a transparent medium, but as a living substance capable of continually transforming its appearance.
Internationally recognised for his contribution to contemporary glass art, Hloška has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, Asia and North America. His sculptures are represented in museum and private collections around the world, where they are admired for their purity of form, technical brilliance and timeless elegance.
A defining chapter in Hloška's career has been his close collaboration with the legendary Czech artist Václav Cigler, one of the most influential figures in contemporary glass art. For more than twenty-one years, Hloška has worked alongside Cigler, playing a vital role in the realisation of many of his most ambitious and technically demanding sculptures. Such a long-standing collaboration is a testament not only to Hloška's exceptional technical mastery, but also to the confidence placed in him by one of the great pioneers of optical glass sculpture.
The demands of this collaboration inevitably left little time for the creation of new works under his own name. As a result, Pavol's appearances at Plateaux became increasingly rare after 2008, while he dedicated himself to the production of Cigler's monumental sculptures. We are therefore especially delighted to welcome him back to Plateaux with a new collection that once again reveals his own artistic vision—one that combines extraordinary technical precision with a profound understanding of light, space and visual perception.
Throughout more than three decades, Plateaux has been privileged to present Pavol Hloška's work to collectors around the world. His sculptures continue to captivate through their remarkable craftsmanship and quiet sophistication, demonstrating that the true beauty of optical glass lies not only in the material itself, but in its endless dialogue with light and the surrounding space.
